Expanding Care Close to Home

As healthcare delivery continues to evolve, many rural hospitals face a common challenge: how to expand access to care while continuing to serve as trusted community resources. The answer often lies in creating facilities that support the full continuum of care, helping patients receive the services they need without traveling far from the communities they call home.

Rice Medical Center's planned Emergency Trauma Center and Wellness & Education Center reflects this approach. Designed to support both immediate medical needs and long-term community health, the project represents a significant investment in the future of healthcare access for Colorado County and surrounding communities.

Responding to Changing Healthcare Needs

For decades, Rice Medical Center has served local families during some of life's most important moments. As patient needs continue to change, the hospital is expanding its campus to provide additional resources that support both emergency treatment and long-term wellness.

The planned Emergency Trauma Center is designed to enhance the delivery of critical care through updated treatment spaces, improved patient flow, and modern facilities that support patients, visitors, and healthcare professionals alike. These improvements will help ensure the medical center can continue meeting the community's emergency healthcare needs for years to come.

At the same time, the Wellness & Education Center reinforces the growing role hospitals play beyond acute care. The facility will include expanded space for physical, occupational, and speech therapy, along with an aquatic therapy pool that supports rehabilitation and mobility. Dedicated areas for community education and wellness-focused programming further expand the hospital's ability to support patient health outside of traditional clinical settings.

Strengthening Care Close to Home

One of the most significant challenges facing many rural communities is access to a diverse range of healthcare services. When patients must travel long distances for specialty care, rehabilitation, or ongoing treatment, healthcare can become less convenient and, in some cases, less accessible.

Projects like Rice Medical Center's expansion help address that challenge by bringing more services together within a single healthcare campus. By supporting emergency care, rehabilitation, wellness initiatives, and community education in one location, the project creates greater opportunities for residents to receive care closer to home.

Construction is anticipated to begin in September 2026 and will be completed in phases, allowing Rice Medical Center to remain fully operational throughout the process. Upon anticipated completion in early 2028, the expanded campus will provide modern facilities designed to serve current needs while supporting future growth and evolving models of care.
