Sugar Creek Baptist - Missouri City Expansion

The expansion of Sugar Creek Baptist Church in Missouri City was driven by a challenge many growing churches quietly face: how do you make room for growth without losing the sense of connection, warmth, and familiarity that made people feel at home in the first place?

As the congregation continued to grow, the church began to experience increasing pressure on key gathering spaces before and after services. Circulation bottlenecks, limited lobby capacity, and overcrowded children’s and ministry areas made it difficult for members and first-time visitors alike to comfortably connect, navigate the campus, and fully engage in church life. At the same time, the church wanted to modernize and expand its facilities without creating a campus that felt oversized, impersonal, or disconnected from its identity.

Before +After

Ziegler Cooper Architects partnered with the church to develop an expansion that balanced growth with hospitality. The project focused not only on increasing capacity, but on improving the overall experience of the campus by creating clearer circulation, more welcoming gathering spaces, expanded ministry areas, and flexible environments that support both worship and community throughout the week.

For churches navigating similar transitions, the project reflects a common reality: growth is exciting, but it can also expose operational and spatial challenges that directly impact ministry. The Sugar Creek Baptist expansion demonstrates how thoughtful planning and phased growth can help a church expand its reach while preserving the culture and sense of community that people value most.
